Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry Solan

Established on 1st December, 1985, the main objective of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, was to promote education, research and extension education in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and allied disciplines. 

It was named after Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the first Chief Minister and the architect of Himachal Pradesh who gave a lot of importance to Horticulture and Forestry and believed that agriculture is of prime importance for the improvement of the State economy.

The University has four constituent colleges, out of which, two are located at the main campus Nauni, one for horticulture and the other for forestry, having 9 and 7 departments, respectively. The third College i.e., College of Horticulture & Forestry is located at Neri in Hamirpur District on Nadaun-Hamirpur state highway, about 6 Km from Hamirpur town and is well connected with bus service. The college offers three Undergraduate Degree Programmes i.e. BSc (Hons.) Horticulture, BSc (Hons.) Forestry and B. Tech. Biotechnology and MSc degree programme in a few subjects. The fourth college i.e. College of Horticulture and Centre of Excellence for Horticulture Research & Extension Mandi (Thunag) is located at Thunag District Mandi. This college offer BSc (Hons.) Horticulture degree programme. In addition, there are five Regional Research Stations, 12 Satellite Stations and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) situated in different zones of the State.

  • Himachal Agricultural College, Solan was established in 1962 and affiliated to the Panjab University.
  • It became one of the campuses of Agriculture Complex of Himachal Pradesh University on its formation in 1970. 
  • With the establishment of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in 1978, this campus became its Horticulture Complex.
  • In 1985 Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya finally received the status of a State University.

Academic Eligibility: B.Sc. (Hons) Horticulture, Forestry, Biotechnology Program

10 plus 2 or equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Mathematics from a recognized University/Board with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% marks in case of SC/ST/ PH category candidates/ in-service nominees of HP) in the above subjects.
OR
Examination of a University/Board/College/School in a foreign country recognized by the Academic Council as equivalent to 10 plus 2 with science subjects provided the candidate has obtained at least 60% aggregate marks or 'B' grade/equivalent.

Admission to BSc Programs

Admission is based on marks secured in the Entrance Test. In case two or more candidates obtain the same percentage of marks, the candidate with highest marks at qualifying examination i.e. 10 plus 2 level shall be considered for admission. In case tie still occurs, the elder in age will be considered for admission.

MBA (Agribusiness) Programme
BSc Agricultural Sciences with an OGPA of 6.00/10 under course credit system or with a minimum of 60% marks from a recognized University or degree from a foreign University with at least 'B' grade or its equivalent recognized by the University.

Postgraduate Admission Procedure
  • The basis of admission to MSc Programmes shall be merit as determined by the result of the entrance test conducted by this University.
  • The basis of admission to MBA (Agribusiness) Programme shall be merit of the entrance test conducted by this University followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview to be conducted by the University. The final selection will be based on the candidate’s overall performance in the entrance test conducted by the University, group discussion & personal interview.

The minimum qualification for admission to Ph D degree programme in respect of different disciplines in order of preference shall be as under:-

  • M Sc degree in concerned discipline with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR-AU system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
Ph D Food Technology
  • M Sc degree in Food Technology/ Food Science & Technology with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR-AU system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • M Tech degree in Food Technology holders with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme and an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65 % marks).

  • M Sc degree in Agricultural Economics/ Economics with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR-AU system with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • M Phil degree in Agricultural Economics/ Economics from a recognized University under UGC system of education with 65% marks. The candidate must have also secured 65% marks at M Sc level.

Ph D Plant Pathology
  • M Sc degree in Plant Pathology/ Mycology & Plant Pathology with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR-AU system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • M Phil degree in Plant Pathology/ Botany from a recognized University under UGC system of education with 65% marks. The candidate must have obtained 65% marks at M Sc level.
Ph D Molecular Biology & Biotechnology
  • M Sc degree in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology/ Biotechnology with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR-AU system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • M Phil degree in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology/ Biotechnology from a recognized University under UGC system of education with 65% marks. The candidate must have also secured 65% marks at M Sc level.
  • M Tech degree in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology holders with research thesis submitted inpartial fulfilment of the programme and an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65 % marks). 
Ph D Microbiology
  • M Sc degree in Microbiology with research thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the programme in the concerned discipline from a recognized University under ICAR-AU system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • M Phil degree in Microbiology from a recognized University under UGC system of education with 65% marks. The candidate must have obtained atleast65% marks at M Sc level.
Ph D Environmental Science .
  • M Sc (Forestry) Environmental Management or M Sc Environmental Science with thesis in partial fulfilment of the programme from recognized University under ICAR- AU system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • M Sc Forestry/ Horticulture/ Agriculture and its allied disciplines with thesis in partial fulfilment of the programme from recognized University under ICAR-AU system of education with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks).
  • M Phil degree in Bio-Sciences/ Physical Sciences from a recognized University under UGC system of education with 65% marks. The candidate must have also secured 65% marks at M Sc level
  • Inservice candidates with M Sc degree from ICAR/ State/ Central Institutes including Associate of IGFNA with diploma equivalent to M Sc Forestry with an OGPA of 6.50/10 (65% marks). For such candidates having atleast 3 years research/ teaching experience, the requirement of thesis in partial fulfilment at M Sc shall be relaxed.

Admission in PhD Programs

The basis of admission to Ph D Programmes shall be the merit of qualifying degree examination only. 
While determining the merit, the following percentage of marks shall be added to the result of those who have distinguished themselves in sports and games recognized by the Indian Olympic Association/Association of Indian Universities and for significant participation in NCC and co-curricular activities

Diploma Programmes

Eligibility: 10 plus 2 or equivalent examination from a recognized University/Board with a minimum of 40% aggregate marks (35% marks in case of SC/ST). 

Admission in Diploma Courses: The basis of admission shall be merit as determined by the 10 plus 2 examination.  In case two or more candidates obtain the same percentage of marks, the elder in age shall be considered for admission
